Jon Clokie | Director of Landscape Architecture, Omrania by Egis

Saudi 100 Nominee

Jon Clokie is Director of Landscape Architecture at Omrania by Egis, with over two decades of practice across the Gulf region and a long-standing focus on how landscape thinking shapes the built environment.

Based in Riyadh, Jon has led landscape architecture across a range of significant projects in Saudi Arabia — including work on the historically sensitive terrain of Diriyah and, more recently, on the emerging frameworks of Vision 2030's major development programmes.

His practice is grounded in a belief that landscape should lead urban form rather than decorate it: that the land itself — its ecology, its climate, its botanical inheritance — should be the primary generative force in how cities are made. In practice that means native and regionally adapted planting, landscapes that respond to the logic of arid ecology rather than working against it, and a preference for design that earns its presence through material and environmental honesty. These are not simply aesthetic positions — they reflect a sustained interest in what it might mean to build cities in the Gulf in a way that takes the land seriously as a generative force. That thinking continues through practice and ongoing research and writing on landscape urbanism in the Gulf context.
